Growing up there were certain movies that stuck with me. My first love was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was a fabulous adventure that helped me escape from the everyday. Not only did it entertain me, I saw myself in the characters shoes. I was right there with them as they traveled to a far off land.
Another great favorite of mine was Goonies. Again it was an adventure that took your mind out of the mundane and expanded it. As suspense climbed, I would sit on the edge on my seat in anticipation of what was next. The stories of the great classics seem to always involve a good-verses-bad character, and the need for something to be resolved in a time sensitive manner.
When I wrote The Gatekeeper's Forbidden Secret I channeled my inner adventurer. I wanted to entertain the reader by letting them be and feel like the characters. The reader is right there with them as they save a world and grow in the process. According to Beta Readers, "It is a fun rollercoaster ride that you don't want to get off of."
There are many great classics out there, and we all want to be entertained. Disney has done a fantastic job of putting story, music and directing into a formula that works. If one breaks down the essence of any great story they will see the inner workings are similar. So have an outline, and put your own thoughts on paper. You never know who will write the next amazing novel.
