After searching the Internet and YouTube for what seemed like countless days, I wanted to know just what makes a novel a Must Read Book. Is it book sales, reviews, awards or is it just a matter of opinion?
Time Magazine did an article of the top 100 books of this millennium. They had 2 journalists compile lists. 80 of their titles matched, but it is purely subjective. Oprah has a list posted to Amazon, but the star rating for the books are across the board. The New York Times lists best sellers, but that is only based on popularity due to sales.
There are certainly books that are written better than others. I believe that a great book flows. The content should not be confusing, and the characters need to be well developed. A great novel begs the reader to not abandon it, as it pulls on their heartstrings and their passion for a great adventure.
Let’s be honest, the categories are endless. What I prefer is not what a teenage boy likes, but a great novel transcends barriers. It does not need complex words or complicated plots. It needs to entertain me and hold my interest. A great book needs to be better than compelling television, social media, and our daily lives. If I am talking to my friends about it, then it is good enough to be a Must Read Book.
